Gauge or Gage | AWG or SWG

Looking for a specific wire gage and not getting any search results? We most likely have you covered but may refer to diameter by gauge instead. While the spelling is relatively interchangeable, we use the more widely used gauge term to ensure consistency within our website and the resistance wire industry at large.

Another important distinction on diameter is AWG versus SWG as gauge size (diameters) differ between the two systems. Wire sourced and used in manufacturing by Hyndman Industrial Products is largely based on the AWG (American Wire Gauge), also known as the Brown & Sharpe (B&S) wire gauge, system with the exception being a handful of metric sizes sourced in millimeter diameters. The SWG (Standard Wire Gauge) unit is typically not used in the resistance wire market. In the event you need to convert from SWG to AWG, you may do so on our online calculator HERE if the diameter is known in either inches or millimeters.

Still have questions related to diameter? We are always here to help. Feel free to email us at sales@resistancewire.com or call us at 888.496.3626.

Import Steel Tariff

Regarding the March 8th announcement and the March 22nd exemption of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports into the United States under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 (19 U.S.C. §1862):

The U.S. Government and Commerce Department announced the reversal of temporary exemption status for Canada, Mexico, and the European Union effectively reinstating the 25% tariff on imported steel as of mid-night, May 31st 2018. All materials sourced by Hyndman are of European origin and intentionally sourced from suppliers to ensure the highest quality. The tariffs are now in effect and all Iron-Chrome-Aluminum (FeCrAl) alloys will be impacted, as well as the N4 alloy (35%Ni, 20%Cr, BAL-Fe). Notification has been received of the immediate increase in raw material pricing between 10 and 25% from key partners in the supply chain which has prompted this notification of an increase to the Hyndman customer base.

The increase on all distributed FeCrAl (KA1, KD, KAF, and ALK) will be 10% with KAPM increasing by 6% and N4 increasing by 14%. This effect will be lessened for manufactured coils, heating elements, and heating element assemblies based on the complexity of the part and may range from 5 to 10%.

A tariff line charge will be invoiced in addition to the base price in an effort to maintain pricing transparency whereas the surcharge will be adjusted accordingly for the tariff. This tariff price increase will be applied and observed on shipments after June 1st, 2018.

Hyndman Industrial Products, Inc. will continue to closely monitor the modification of this tariff by the U.S. Government and Commerce Department and will work with the supply chain and trade partners to ensure a continuous supply of raw material to meet current and future commitments in a reasonable timeframe and at a competitive price.

If you have any questions or concerns with how this tariff will potentially affect your business through the supply from Hyndman Industrial Products, Inc., please contact us by phone at 888-496-3626 or by email at sales@resistancewire.com.

Sincerely,

Non-Stock Minimums

UPDATE: Custom Manufactured and Respooled Minimum Orders

As of April 1st 2018, Hyndman Industrial Products, Inc. has implemented a $50.00 minimum per line requirement (excluding commodity metal surcharge) for all products requiring custom manufacture or respool. This change is being implemented to offset setup & order processing costs related to producing custom offerings not available from the inventory shelf.

Please note this line minimum does not apply to inventory available in stock, (shipped at present quantity, on present package or spool). Orders for multiple line items from inventory are subject to a $50.00 minimum per order charge and may have line values under this threshold as long as total invoice exceeds it.

If you are interested in receiving a quote of any given alloy and gauge, please contact us at sales@resistancewire.com or fill out the form on our Contact Us page.

Proper Spool Handling – Reducing the Potential for Tangled Wire

General

Wire and ribbon spools are best handled and stored in the “rolling position” with the spool setting on both flanges as pictured here. Storing spools on their end (single flange) can cause the outer wraps of the spool to shift or drop over the underlying layers and cause tangles when unspooling.
Another critical step in storing both wire and ribbon is to maintain positive tension on the starting end of the spool. Do not allow the end to hang freely at any time as the loss of tension will cause the material to spring back and dramatically increases the likelihood of crossovers.

Receiving and Inspection

Upon receiving your order from Hyndman Industrial Products, please ensure spool arrived in an acceptable condition. Damage to the box or spool flanges are good indicators of poor handling by shipping contractors, and all damage should be reported upon receipt as a claim to the freight handler.
Damaged spools should be respooled prior to use. If respooling is not possible, please report spool as a total loss to the freight handler and notify your customer service associate at Hyndman for replacement.
If incoming inspection is performed, all sampled spools should be maintained under tension while a sample is obtained. At no time should tension be released, and spool must be “reverse tied off” or taped as they were received.
[Spools should never be tied off by twisting the startup end under another wrap of wire.]

Storage

All spools should be stored in the “rolling position” on racks designed to prevent free-rolling or in their original packaging from Hyndman. Spools should never be positioned in such a way that the flange comes in contact with the wire on another spool or stacked in multiple layers.
Spools should be stored at a constant temperature consistent with the operating environment where the wire will be used. If wire is stored in a cold environment it is recommended that the wire warm up for 24 hours prior to use to allow the tension to adjust to temperature where it will be used.
